Achilles Tendonitis Q & A

Achilles tendinitis Q&A

 What is Achilles tendinitis?

  • Achilles tendinitis is caused by inflammation and pain in the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the calcaneus (heel bone).

What is the cause of Achilles tendinitis?

  • It is typically caused by overuse or repetitive strain on the Achilles tendon. Achilles tendinitis can also be linked to flatfeet, obesity, and tight calf muscles, which increase tendon strain.

What are the symptoms of Achilles tendinitis?

  • Pain along the back of the calf or above the heel that worsens with activity. It may occur after running, climbing stairs, or playing sports. This pain can be in the substance of the tendon or the back of the heel bone where the tendon attaches. It can involve a palpable thickening of the tendon.

How is Achilles tendinitis treated?

  • RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) therapy, over-the-counter NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen), physical therapy (such as eccentric heel lifts), activity modifications, supportive shoes with heel lifts to offload the tendon, orthotics, CAM boot if the pain is severe.  If these conservative treatments do not heal the condition, then more advanced treatments are used, including shockwave therapy and surgery.
