Neuroma Q & A

What is a neuroma?

  • A neuroma is a benign thickening of nerve tissue, which can be caused by compression or irritation of the nerve.

What is the cause of a neuroma?

  • Compression of the nerve based on foot type, injury, or use of tight shoes with a narrow toe-box or high heels can cause increased inflammation and enlargement of the nerve. People with high arches, flat feet, bunions, or hammertoes can be predisposed to developing a neuroma.

What are the symptoms of a neuroma?

  • Burning/pain in the ball of the foot that can radiate into toes. Tingling, burning, or numbness of the toes. Feeling like there is a pebble inside the shoe or like there is a sock bunched up.

How is a neuroma treated?

  • Offloading with metatarsal pads, ice to help with swelling, orthotics to help distribute pressure around the nerve, shoe modifications, steroid injections, and over the counter NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen). In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to decompress or remove the nerve.
